About The Gallery

last updated: 05-09-2008

Cloud King is a place to see and be seen. Cloud King was created as an alternative to poorly designed, mass-market online art galleries. Cloud King is the brainchild of Tim Murtaugh, who wanted a way to help art find eyes.

The gallery is updated monthly. (It's looking more like bi-monthly.)

About the Artists

Cloud King is proud to be showing the works of:

... And more. (I've stopped trying to keep up.)

Some are young, some are established, some have never been shown and others are collected. Please explore all of them. If an artist interests you, visit their site. Learn more.

Interested in Showing Your Work?

Cloud King is interested in showing it too. Please see our submission form for guidelines and suggestions.

We have some great artists, and we need more. Paints, charcoals, pencils, illustrations, photos, comic art, whatever — show it to us.

About the Art

The works on Cloud King are not for sale through Cloud King. In fact, they may not be for sale at all. If you are interested in a piece, please contact the artist directly.

All the works displayed are protected by US and international copyright laws. If you would like to use a piece for any reason, please contact Cloud King or the artist to find out if it is possible. Any use without written consent is strictly prohibited.

About the Site

Cloud King's web site was designed by the award-winning (he makes us say that) Mike Pick. It was built by Tim Murtaugh, who also acts as curator. Although Tim has never won an award, he does all right.

Update: Cloud King has won a Web Standards Award, so Tim is no longer awardless. (But Mike is still one up on him... Damn!)

Update 2: Cloud King has also won Best CSS Site thanks to the 2005 SXSW Interactive Festival!

The markup for the site should validate as XHTML1 (strict), and the CSS should validate as CSS1. (If it doesn't, we apologize, and will refund your money in full.) By leaning heavily on CSS for appearance, the underlying HTML is remarkably clean and well-structured. This allows the content to be accessible to older browsers (such as Netscape 4), without choking them with modern markup.

We've done as much as we can to take advantage of support for web standards in today's browsers, and provided graceful alternatives to others. (For instance, IE doesn't like PNGs and Safari doesn't handle animated GIF rollovers very well, but you won't notice what you're missing. It's a shame, though.) We're also taking advantage of OS X's Quartz and Windows XP's ClearType rendering systems and using textual headers across most of the site. If your system doesn't have font smoothing, we feel bad for you.

About the Type

Cloud King's logotype and sidebar headings are set with Adage Script by Jukebox Type, available through Veer. Cloud King also uses Georgia for headings and navigation, and Arial for body text.

About the “Cloud King”

Cloud King was just a made up name, Tim's version of "TBD", until Mike came along. He saw a brand, drew the plane, and we haven't looked back. Thanks Mike.

Awards Are Fun

We've been lucky to receive some nice recognition for this site, the least we can do is link back:
